I have just listened to Rubinstein's recording of this piece, and this performance seems faster and more passionate. I watched UA-cam videos of young pianists play this, like Daniil Trifonov (sweating profusely). How did Rubinstein do it at his age? Even for those who doubt it is him playing, there are plenty of videos of live performances from his old age, many of which his hands are visible. Now with UA-cam, we can see many more of these than were possible at the time, so his career achievement into old age seems even more remarkable now with the passage of time. He continued to play the big pieces right up till the end of his career.

And THIS is why Horowitz is so revered as a player. The excitement of this performance is off the scale. Yes - the sound is pretty bad and they almost didn't get tot the end together but WOW. Nobody has played like that since. The closest I've ever come is Argerich/Pappano in Japan in 2001. I must have about 10 pirated Horowitz Tchaikovsky 1's from this period but this is near the top (personally I think the 1953 Szell is slightly better, but still so exciting). Imagine being in the audience listening to this incredible man. I only heard him live once and was totally blown away by the sound

This really is a wonderful performance, but I have the same feeling listening to it as I felt at the only time I heard him live. Royal Festival Hall in the same year - Beethoven 5. He walked onstage slowly, head bent down, almost shambling. Didn't really bow - just sat and waited. Then played amazingly well. Note perfect but rather like a doll who had been wound up and was going through the motions. I don't think he knew where he was at all. I was backstage after and Brenda was regaling everyone about 'dear John', and I saw him sitting in a chair in the corner, on his own. I went over, shook his hand, and spoke to him for a while. Again I got the impression that, although he was charming to talk to, he had no idea where he was
